Getting fights has always been a problem in EVE. I have played since the start, and people will allways try to bring numbers and ships to ensure victory.
If you want a fight, you have to fight outnumbered or surprise your opponent. Nearly all PvP in EVE can be classed as "ganks". Recently I was in a 5 vs. 5 fight. 4 BS and a ceptor vs. 3 BS and 2 recons. Because we had 4 BS, we got some remarks in local about us "blobbing" after the fight.
Sadly EVE is, from a design perspective, a WERY bad PvP game. You spend hours waiting, and then either get lagged, instapopped, ganked yourself or completely gank your opponent. Perhaps the "GF" remarks represent what people hope for, but how many times do you actually mean "GF" when you write it?
Much can be attributed to the psychology of man. We're all terribly bad at loosing and will avoid taking risks because of it. People are very cautious in EVE. I am myself cautious to the extreeme, and ofcourse that gets in the way of fights...
Technical problems aside, there is still a fundemental flaw in the design of EVE PvP IMO. The mechanics encourage you to rely on numbers. Look at control towers and sov. Look at the whole "lock, then F1-F8"-design-ethos. It the very core, EVE is not a Player Versus Player game. It is a Players versus Players game (plural).
In terms of delivering the heart-thumping adrenaline rush, EVE simply fails when compared to other equally financhially succesful games. You cannot log on, undock and have fun. You have to WORK for fights. PR, control towers, spam, smack and arrogance can get you fights, but even with an "everyone vs. us", it's still too much to expect constant action.
A lot of EVE PVP is in fact very realistic. You wait and wait. Then you wait some more. The you get a false alarm, and wait even longer. Then you get a suitable oppopent, and either he or you make a mistake and the fight is over in 10-15 minutes. For what?! 10 minutes and hour tops for an entire day of waiting.
At least we dont have to sit in a trench for 2-3 months before getting opponents to come by and die.
Perhaps EVE has turned into a sci-fi trench warfare game, instead of the action-packed blitz-krieg type warfare he have all grown up watching in movie and TV?
(p.s. sorry for long rant)
